West Side Story

I'm playing West Side Story with St Michael's Grammar School which at the Athenaeum Theatre. The music is spectacular with very catchy rhythms and lots of jazz influence (very nice for saxophones). Come along and see the film that made every guy want to be tough in a gang that does pirouettes!

The President’s Own

I was in Washington DC and fortunate enough to listen to a performance by the Marine Chamber Ensembles in the Sousa Band Hall. The Marine Band was established in 1798 and had Sousa himself as their 17th Director who made them one of the first music ensembles to make sound recordings. They only take the top music graduates, have incredible sight reading ability and play very, very tight.

A new saxophone work up up-and-coming composer John Leszczynski was premiered by soprano saxophonists Steven Temme. The three movement work drew its inspiration from a poem by Pablo Neruda with the first movement featuring long, yearning phrases that never quite resolve. The second movement required the utmost control and balance at the extremes of the saxophone registers with the soprano sound melting into the reverberating piano tones. The final movement was a pointillistic hommage to Schubert. A new composer for saxophonists to check out – he's also written a sax quartet.

New Saxophone Work

Stay tuned for a new saxophone work by Lorenzo Alvaro to be premiered in 2012. Lorenzo is a PhD candidate at the University of Melbourne and he is working on a 3 movement sonata for soprano saxophone and piano. I’m looking at premiering it later in the year with Amir Farid – concert details will be up on the website.

Melbourne Zoo Twilights

If you haven’t been to the zoo and are looking for an excuse to go, the summer twilight series is as good a reason as any. On Sunday 19th Feb at the Melbourne Zoo I’ll be playing with Marina Prior and Kane Alexander with some favourite hits from musicals and classic big band numbers. Show starts at 5:30pm, plenty of time to check out the tiger cubs beforehand!

Upcoming performance

Tonight I'm performing in the pre-show for Il Divo at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl. A lovely location at this time of year, sit on the grass and listen to some Australian classics being sung by Denis Walter.
